Say I For Me
Carl Annala & Andrew Anderson (live music)

Say I For Me is a butoh solo dance by Carl Annala with live music by Andrew Anderson inspired by the horror film Possession, particularly the character Anna and her hand movements. Coincidentally there is a striking similarity to the second card of the Taro, the Magician.
Dressed in a black hooded robe adorned with symbols culled from string theory, the Fluxus art movement and the occult, Annala used his expressive hands to mimic animals, insects, orchestra conductors and alchemical magicians in an ever changing, hypnagogic dialogue with the audience as well as his own Jungian Shadow. Viewers have noted a strong resemblance to the xenomorph from the film Alien and have found the revelations in the performance both frightening and hilarious.
The live soundtrack by Anderson is eery and noisy without being overbearing. Created by sampling the vocalizations by Isabelle Adjani from her role in Possession as well as manipulated field recordings which seamlessly accompany the dance.
Carl Annala is a painter, musician and a butoh dancer with 28 years of experience living in Portland Oregon. He is the founder and Artistic Director of Ash Pillar Butoh and the Northwest Butoh Festival.
Andrew Anderson, based in Portland OR, creates sound pieces out of carefully curated field recordings, hidden samples, destroyed tape, and various instruments, both electronic and analog, with a focus on quiet repetition, drone, and patient change.
